More independent musicians and bands are releasing quality songs than ever
before and the music business if you can call it that has transformed so much
over the past ten years that it's left many of you feeling alienated and confused
about your music career or unsure of how to move forward It's clear you need
to adapt to survive in this game so this month we're going to analyse one of
the latest music developments happening around us and create some positive
thinking We begin by examining the streaming service Spotify if your band
currently has little or nothing to do with this music platform then I hope this
tells you everything you need to know
Daniel Ek the chief executive of Spotify had to
wipe the cum off his face after agreeing to a
new licencing deal with Warner Music Group
the last of the big three record companies to
allow Spotify's
million users access to its
back catalogue Well it's mainly
million
users who actually subscribe and pay to use it
So now the Swedish loss making company has
had to suck off Warner Music Group to get
their music and continue it's quest to one day
make a profit Arguably the options open to
Spotify appear to be either one of two things
raise money for its subscription services or
somehow persuade artists and their labels to
receive even less money but you'll probably
have no say in the decision making So what
does any of this actually mean then? Basically
things are rapidly changing for Spotify As they
head towards Wall street they still don't appear
to have worked out a business model that'll
generate enough money to sustain the
company So something will have to change
Spotify may eventually have no choice one day
but to terminate free streaming We'll see if I'm
right yeah?

Thousands of users subscribe everyday to
Spotify and whilst they're downloading tunes
the big players in the music industry weigh up
and address the financial impact that the
company will have on them Because the
numbers promoted in the news headlines are
always in the millions of dollars it's almost
impossible to relate to or feel any type of
connection if you're an emerging artist because
you're told from day one that you will earn
almost nothing substantial by having your
songs and albums on there The majority of
established artists got where they are because
they sold records or were fortunate enough to
have money invested in them and arguably
many made their fortunes before Spotify
became a major player So some of you
upcoming musicians may be wondering what
exactly is the incentive for having your music
available on Spotify if it can't generate you a
good income even if you sell thousands of
records? It costs money to record music and
obviously selling lots of your music isn't going
to be much use for funding future releases This
