Catch Your Breath is the latest EP from well-known local singer-songwriter SheBeat (Jodie Schofield).

Released on November 22nd, it features a title track, Untethered, and Impossible, plus an extra stripped-back version of Freaky Crazy on the limited edition CD.

Jodie told us “Catch Your Breath was produced in Birmingham by local producer Jack Tasker at DROMA. “Catch Your Breath is a ‘don’t worry be happy’ vibe track, SheBeat philosophy is very glass half full, since life can certainly have its ups and downs, this upbeat number tries to remind you to stay in the moment, take a breath and smile - with added ‘friends claps’ to join in with when you listen.

Untethered is my first co-write. My friend Dave Ridley wanted to write about a heartbreak he had gone through and I pulled out my sad chords and a large portion of empathy to scribble this lovely song, which Dave also sang backing vocals on. Impossible is a yearny love song (one of my specialisms) that I wrote a few years ago but had not recorded before. I asked Jack to add some twinkly glockenspiel because it matched the love-struck sentiment.

Freaky Crazy (stripped back) is a re-record of one of my popular songs, stripped back to how I wrote it, bare and moody... I think this song suits reworking & look forward to playing with it time and time again.

Self-publishing means trying to get as many plays as I can across all the platforms, but I have made 100 limited edition CDs available as a keepsake/ way of supporting your fav singer-songwriter.”

SheBeat picked up her guitar and launched onto the live music scene in Liverpool August 2012. Singing original songs from the start, filling the inbetween bits with stories and smiles, SheBeat isn’t quite like anyone else.

After a year on the open mic scene learning her stage craft, SheBeat soon graduated to billed gigs and local festivals. A self-titled debut EP, was recorded in a home studio by Darren Jones, with Beach Boys style keys and backing vocals from We Are Catchers’ Peter Jackson. Next chance to record was with Motor Museum’s James Mellor. Going for a more intimate, stripped back sound with no frills.

Both are available for streaming and downloads on SheBeat Records published via Ditto Music. SheBeat is a part of the Sofar Sounds UK family, launching Sofar Truro in 2017, performing for Sofar Liverpool and currently friendly with Sofar Birmingham when they need social media support. 2017 launched SheBeat Meets - a live podcast featuring chat and live performance from local singer songwriters, picked up by Brum Radio. A 2018 highlight was securing a spot at Liverpool Soundcity.

Catch Your Breath is a lovely, sweet collection of acoustic songs with a vibe not a million miles away from Everything but the Girl.

The title track is gentle, uplifting and insanely catchy. Sparse acoustic guitar & bass are supplemented by Jodie’s perfectly weighted vocals and percussion. This is a song that you can imagine some pop-factory picking up on and making a huge hit out of. I love it just as it is though.

Second track Untethered, is musically just as sparse as the opener but is significantly darker. Jodie sings of a heartbreak that is subsequently revealed to be somewhat of a blessing.

Closing track Impossible, oozes positivity and raises the mood right back up. Anyone who listens to this EP and says they don’t feel even slightly happier afterwards, either has no soul or is lying.
