Mayday

Birmingham Grime artist Mayday released his new track 'Facetime' on 27th September.

The only grime I know much about is around the sides of my bathtub so I’m probably not the best person to review Mayday but here goes...

Mayday - FacetimeThroughout the song, Mayday tells us "I don't want to waste time" but for me, an uncool bloke in his mid-forties who doesn't hear much rap, this was a bit of a waste of time.

The musical element is very minimal here and, aside from a little synth riff, and a basic beat and bassline, it's essentially a bloke reacting to being dumped via Facetime, with the main emphasis being on the Facetime element of the story. It has an everyday-life, down-to earth quality but lyrically, there's not a lot going on. There’s no sign of the angst of Eminem or the poetry of The Streets, the result being quite a mundane track without any real edge.

Named 'Rising Star' at the 2019 Birmingham Music Awards, he's obviously doing something right in the genre and if the sounds eminating form most cars at traffic lights these days is anything to go by, there's clearly a massive global market for this sort of thing so good luck to him.

Mayday has four local dates in the next month and looking further ahead, he will be travelling to Japan in December , backed by Help Musicians UK, to craft music with Japanese Grime MCs and perform in Osaka.
