Verdict:
Birmingham based Revenant Dead
release 'The Rising Phoenix' which is the first
official single from the bands’ upcoming third
studio album 'Heroes Without Villains' due for
release on April 18th. The single reveals they've
maintained the majority of RD characteristics
that fans will remember from the previous album
'Two Evils' and have struck gold here with a
brilliant hypnotic chorus - “If I suffer for you then
you’ll suffer for me, we believe in the dream not
the nightmare we see. We’re not trying to win,
just make the most of the loss, there's no
promise to keep. Whatever the cost”. Whether
the rest of the album will include more of the
death metal elements from the past remains to
be seen, but this is an outstanding return. If you
are new to Revenant Dead, then from their
earlier work I'd say they have a very strong
European feel and a mix of many great
established metal names. Vocally think
America's Mastodon, but coming across at times
as an English sounding Rammstein and
musically perhaps wandering towards the likes
of Entombed or Cradle Of Filth. Dissecting this
single its clear the influence floodgates are wide
open and Revenant Dead successfully
demonstrate that their songwriting skills are on
‘full headbutt’ on 'The Rising Phoenix'.

Verdict:
Blackcountry band Gin Annie release
their official debut EP with three songs for you to
enjoy. Gin Annie follow in the footsteps of Black
Rose Cadillac, Soley Mourning, The Bad
Flowers and Stone Broken and evolve in what is
now a thriving hard rock scene. Out of the trio of
tunes 'New Bad Habit', 'All I Want' and 'Born To
Rock And Roll' I think their title track is their main
catch here as it sells them the best. Slick, classic
hook chorus, memorable guitar solo and plenty
of riff stabs to keep you interested. Overall a
good rock band dishing out a solid style, peachy
grooves, chromatic guitar riffage and a
passionate singer (who in places does sound
similar to the excellent Mat Partridge).
Songwriting wise there's nothing that would part
the sea, however I admire the anti-cliche drum
ending of 'All I want'; the only technical term I
know for this is “band leader gets tired of hearing
all instruments solo after last chord of song,
nods head and drummer crashes cymbal”. They
include this sequence near the beginning of the
tune and then later close the song with it. A nice
touch. Go to their website to order your copy
