RYAN'S GIG GUIDE November 2016 - page 21

RGG November 2016 - p.21
The mainstreammusic industry isn't offering much in the way of role models either; we all used
to be aware of songwriters writing powerful tunes who made a stand against tyranny or raised
awareness of important issues that many were simply too afraid to address These days we have
national media showcasing lame twerking auto tuned pop simpletons miming songs written for
them by dyslexic satanists that are happy lowering standards and making the music scene (and
songwriting in general) appear like horse shit on a stick Here's the reality The mainstreammusic
industry has always tried its hardest to ignore artists from the Midlands which means there isn't
a fair representation nayionally and yet we have some of the greatest songwriters in the world
based in Birmingham and the Black Country
The good thing about the Midlands music scene is that it breeds role models Despite the
mainstream music industry's obsession with concentrating on bands and artists that suck the
cock of the capital city London really doesn't seem to be calling inspiring or delivering anymore
The really interesting original musicians and songwriters all appear to be emerging from central
England; arguably because they realised a long time ago that the mainstream music industry
itself is an ignorant joke Being an independent DIY artist has not only become a way of life but
also total freedom of expression without interference from a record label More artists and bands
from this area are in full control of their creativity and careers than ever before Although that
might sound unfortunate and lonely this means that those who take their music seriously and
produce results also gain all the rewards without having to share any success with a heartless
corporate cunch of bunts who own a record company As a result of this a genuine and powerful
music scene is growing in the Midlands
Quite an interesting development occurs when bands and songwriters get ignored by influential
people in the music industry and are forced to independently finance produce promote and
release their own music themselves When these bands begin to receive favourable results from
a release they automatically create their own level of standards and will only raise them as they
continue to make more music If you consider the large amount of money it costs for an
independent artist to finance a professional sounding album (and effectively set up their own
label) then it's common sense to assume that when planning further releases that they'll be
instinctively thinking business and ensuring that future songs and records are superior to their
previous ones They can't afford to piss money away so you can expect better music Now that
many Midlands artists have already made that independent leap launched their first album and
gained considerable success; second albums are coming into season which means that we can
all expect a lot more to come from this areas’ music scene The future is looking good for
Birmingham and the Black Country
You are now living in one of the most creative and original music scenes in the United Kingdom
By reading this you are an important part of it You can let others know how great it is via
Facebook or Twitter or by sharing a music video of a band from our region going to a gig listed
in this guide or by spreading the word of a good song you heard by a Midland music genius If
you are in a band then you need to help your fellow brothers and sisters around you who also
make great music too The bigger our music scene is the better for the music world Get to it
