RGG January 2017 - p.8
First of all
of you have likely stopped
reading because you'll shout “Oh yeah we have
a band Twitter account but it doesn't do
anything” or “Mr Steve Underpants updates our
Twitter every month and the band has real
friends including @MissBoobs Cash and
@DireMarketingSolutions who both worship
our music” Most people in the UK if they are
really honest have absolutely no idea what to
do with their Twitter account and just set one
up because it seems professional having it But
if yours looks like a bag of human excrement
then that can reflect on your band or image too
A common thing stated is “Oh we haven't got
time for Twitter” but these are people who
frequently rant their drivel and opinions on
Facebook and in many cases don't even talk
about or share their own music on that
platform
million users are on Twitter so if
you think it's not important then there's
probably a lot of other things in your life which
don't qualify as being important such as
washing your hands after having a wee or
avoiding licking windows every day
Like other social media platforms your profile
picture hints at what you do There isn't a
correct formula for this but it makes sense to
have something demonstrating that your band
is active or advertises that you are a musician

It helps if it is uniformed with your other
webpages; if you use a logo on your Facebook
band account then have the exact same on your
Twitter; it helps fans reviewers and promoters
identify and locate you if they are searching for
your Twitter page Many artists have their most
recent CD release as a main picture or use a
good band photo
I'd advise not leaving the band description blank
or allowing other peoples’ imagination to guess
what you are Be short and to the point if possi
ble but make it professional with correct
spelling Include a web link to another site on
your Twitter page such as your main band
website; it'll receive extra attention if users like
what you do so make sure you've typed it in
correctly! If you don't have a band website then
perhaps include a link to your YouTube
channel? Don't type
wedontneedawebsite com
or some obscure link which has nothing to do
with your music
Content? Here's where bands normally fall
apart miserably A tweet is basically a micro
version of a Facebook status update and there's
barely enough room to include a photo or a web
link but it can be done if you take care with
your wording However bands tend to purely
depend on synchronized accounts automatically

Independent artists and bands now have access to more resources than ever
before despite living in an age of over saturated media but many musicians
living in the UK simply aren't using their heads; don't panic as you aren't on
your own This month we're looking at ways in which a band or musician can
arguably improve their career by using Twitter correctly as a lot of you are
bloody useless at it
