The sun is out; the barbecue’s been stoked up.
The beer and wine is flowing and all your guests
are soaking up the vibe. What could make the
party even better? If you want a soundtrack to
your summer, then this debut album by West
Midlands indie four piece Dinky is definitely
what you need.
The album kicks off with
The Place Between
the Scenes
. There’s more than a hint of Primal
Scream but then add some Pixies to it and, well,
you get the idea. Next up is
In Her Eyes
, closely
followed by
Perfect Red
. Gavin Medza’s lead
vocals shine on this one and as is the case with
all tracks on the album, the vocal
harmonies are glorious.
Frances
is up next and it’s a track that instantly
makes you feel happy. It showcases those
vocals and harmonies wonderfully. Hints of The
Lemonheads can be heard on this one.
Faithful
slows the tempo down but certainly not in a bad
way. It’s a gorgeous track with a couple of lovely
additions; female backing vocals and strings.
Coda
picks the tempo back up again before
we get hit by
Speeding Car
which takes it up to
the next level. It’s a brilliant track with a
particularly catchy riff. It reminds me of
something Irish three piece Ash would have
done back in their heyday.
Love Runaway
slows
things down again so we can get ready for the
penultimate track,
What About Tomorrow
. Along
with
Frances
and
Faithfu
l, it’s a highlight of the
album.
And finally, we have
Invisible
and it certainly
isn’t. It’s a rich, well rounded track and is
consistent in style with the rest of the album.
The punchy, almost spoken-word bridge breaks
it up perfectly. But hang on a bit, it’s not the final
track at all. Well, it sounds like the band have
saved the very best of a great bunch until last.
Give Me Your Love
is an absolute blinder. If
you’re not bum-shuffling on your seat or tapping
your feet to this one, check you’ve still got a
pulse! Even as I’m writing this, I’ve got the
whole bum-shuffling-foot-tapping-shoulder-wig-
gling combo going on.
I honestly cannot fault a single note on this
small circle of indie-rock joy. This is an album
that anyone can enjoy. It’s easy on the ears and
I’m definitely going to be spinning it at our next
shindig.
