RGG September 2015 - p.23
quirky pub hidden away down an alleyway in
one of the biggest shitholes I have ever visited
– Gloucester! Surrounded by thousands of wine
bottles seemingly blu tacked to the walls the
boys from Birmingham threatened to destroy
every last one with their own brand of skuzzy
rock ‘n roll thunder!
The pub was filled with some of the most
random people I have ever encountered in my
life! The gypsy boy with pointy teeth chirpsing
on the missus the old boys in the corner
awaiting death a couple of chav girls and a
Teddy boy wearing a horses head were the pick
of the bunch but by no means an exhaustive
list And each and every one of these unique
beauties were fully rocking out by the time the
first song had finished
DSS ripped through a minute set without a
second of pause Sheehan seemingly on an
endless quest to use anything he could get his
hands on as a percussion instrument The walls
the rafters the speakers and the ceiling all
received a hammering giving his well worn
drum kit a little rest
Now anyone who knows me will back me up
when I say I rarely get over enthusiastic over
anything but in the case of The Dead Sea Skulls I
am going to break type
This performance in deepest dirty Gloucester was
one of the best live performances I’ve have ever
witnessed! As a front man Sheehan has got
something and has it in abundance You can’t take
your eyes off him as he engages the crowd totally
Be it demanding the crowd to chant and swear “if
your boss is a fucking wanker” or leading a
sing along to a song people have never heard
before he has a charisma so many currently
popular indie bands lack He also drops out a
quality line in beat boxing pulls a trumpet out
from nowhere mid set and my personal favourite
– throws his drums in the crowd hands out drum
sticks and cajoles innocent bystanders into
becoming part of the band
Not so long ago Grandmaster Ash was drumming
for The Twang; who have for many years been my
favourite band It might be time for Birmingham’s
other indie boys to move over now the DSS are in
town If you get to see one live gig this month get
down to the Actress & Bishop and witness the best
live show of the year I promise you won’t be
disappointed
