RYAN'S GIG GUIDE OCTOBER 2015 - page 15

RGG December 2015 - p.15
Verdict:
I was sent this 6 track EP, and although it's hard rock, it wasn't
quite what I thought it would be. 'Dark Place' starts with a riff that made me first think 'The Offspring'
but it soon sharply strays off course into something more original. When the guitar intro. to
'Corrosions' began, I was expecting to hear cheesy melodic rock for the next three minutes, but
then the vocalist cuts in and all the rules fly out of the window making this become a real cracking
and deep song with, to me, a few trademarks of the band Cold. I'm not sure if the song 'Corrosions'
is a clue, but I also got, on listening to this EP, a flash of bands such as Corrosion Of
Conformity - if you like them then I'll bet that Quiet The Thief will definitely be to your
liking. Highlight to me was 'Malice' for it's super singable rock anthem chorus. There
are brilliant music moments on this EP but it's the singer in this band that holds it all
together; as soon as he opens his mouth you listen. Excellent band.

Verdict:
The SoapGirls began as a South
African pop duo Mille and Mie who were previously signed to Universal Music;
then they decided they didn't like the corporate machine and what it stood for,
gave them the middle finger and went underground so that they could do exactly
what they wanted musically. 'Calls For Rebellion' is their idea of what popular
music should be, it's punk rock mixed with pop and it's awesome. 'Welcome To The
Neighbourhood' is a refreshing rock tune with memorable vocal hooks and classy
guitar stabs. Highlights for me were 'Pretty Good Looking' with it's stadium riffs and epic
lyrics, 'Champagne Cocaine' because it's full of uptempo punk energy and finally the sombre
sounding album finisher 'Real'. It's an album that really has something to say and the songwriting
pisses over a lot of so called big rock bands. If pop music became this then we'd actually check
out the charts more.
