Ryan's Gig Guide - March 2020

Birmingham newcomers The Transmission are set to release their debut recordings into the World this March. The Transmission, currently comprised of James Covell (keyboards, bass, drums) and Layla Tutt (guitar, bass, vocals) created their first single at a make-shift studio at their friend’s unit in Digbeth. With borrowed equipment and borrowed time, and without the full band in place the pair have skilfully crafted a piece of art. The seeds for The Transmission were sown in 2018 when keyboardist and producer James Covell, moved to Birmingham from his hometown of Newcastle on a mission to start a band. He tracked down Layla Tutt with whom he’d collaborated years before on a community music project. Layla was playing out on The Birmingham scene, singlehandedly performing her own material with the energy of a full rhythm section. After jams and a few gigs the pair knew they had a true musical connection and spent 2019 working hard at the studio developing their sound, testing out new material on audiences in Birmingham and Sheffield, and recording the debut single. Fantastic debut single The Underside, is an unashamedly rich and impassioned song of hope and carries the torch for the old British rock tradition into modern times. By contrast Dawn Song at Night, the B-side, is cool and spacious, it’s entrancing bassline and yé yé beat are drenched in Hammond organ and sparkling piano. 13/03/20 sees the release of the single on CD, Bandcamp and streaming platforms, and the launch of a Kickstarter campaign to fund their next musical offering, an EP to be released on vinyl later this year. Fans, followers and any top class drummers out there are encouraged to join them on the journey. The Transmission will be performing an acoustic set at Centrala, Digbeth, Birmingham on 30/03/20. Doors open at 8. £5 or £7 with CD. mouse-pointer listentothetransmission.co.uk camera-alt James Dawson Monday 30th March Centrala, Digbeth  www.ryansgigguide.com 20 rgg Mar 2020
