Ryan's Gig Guide - March 2019

Thursday 14th March O2 Institute, Birmingham  Dodie’s songs are a beautiful combination of indie-folk-pop that align her with indie art- ists like Bryde and She Makes War. By Fat BlokeWith No Tattoos Her ‘Human’ ep, released in January, is a stunning piece of work. It opens with ‘Arms Unfolding’ - a short intro with layered backing vocals with a choral vibe. Dodie then launch- es into ‘Monster’ with its ringtone-esque pop-production that has the potential to propell Dodie into the mainstream com- mercial music world. In contrast,‘Not what I meant’ featuring LewisWatson, has a beautiful mininmalist quality which for no discernable rea- son, conjures up a feeling of a winter’s day in New York City (I’ve never been!). Dreamy title track ‘Human’ is another collaboration, this time with Tom Walker. The clean organ sound on If I’m being honest’ crosses into the realms of The Beautiful South or some of the less raucous Eels numbers. The real folky gems of this ep are ‘She’ & ‘Burned out’ which are awash with strings. Dodie arrives in Birmingham at the O2 Academy on Thursday 14th March as part of a 24-date tour which takes her across Europe & the UK.  www.dodie.co Check out Dodie in our Spotify playlist www.ryansgigguide.com/audio  ONLINE EDITION www.ryansgigguide.com rgg Mar 2019 41
