I first encountered El Sam when we were both on a bill of solo acts a few years ago. I was fairly new to performing and my limited experience of singer-songwrit- ers came from acoustic open mics where most people sat down and strummed their usual repertoire of covers but Sam, singing to a backing track on this occasion, per- formed as though he was in an arena in front of thousands rather than 30 people above a restaurant in Harborne! He lit up the night and really stood out as a mightily expressive singer with great style and individuality.A seemingly band-ob- sessed local scene would do well to mix things up a little by broadening their line-ups to include artists like El Sam, who can offer an original & exhilerating set. In a recent online post, El Sam touched on how people can’t seem to look beyond his style, to the real El Sam. His songs certainly show that this is a real artist with a lot of depth, producing real music. I Like It A Lot” OUT JUNE 14th KARKOSA Karkosa formed in Birmingham by brothers Michael and JackWarnock. After recruiting Tom Rushton on lead guitar,Will Clews on keyboard and Isabelle Smith on bass the band wrote and recorded a batch of singles which they self released online. Heavily inspired by Catfish and the Bottlemen and The Amazons, Karkosa blend heavy guitar riffs, subtle synths and Killers-esque mono- logues, to produce the perfect adolescent anthems. Karkosa have been nominated for “Best In- die Band” by the Birmingham Music Awards consecutively for the past two years and won the HotVox 2018 Isle ofWight online competition, out voting over 5000 other bands. The enthusiasm of their Korean fans caught the attention of management and record labels, and after signing to Seoul based independent Beeline Records, Karkosa returned to the peninsula early in 2019 for headline shows and recording sessions. www.karkosa.co.uk Upcoming Dates: 31st May BBC Introducing Showcase Castle & Falcon, Birmingham 8th June Shirley Beer festival Check them out in our Spotify playlist www.ryansgigguide.com/audio www.ryansgigguide.com rgg Jun 2019 25 www.ryansgigguide.com 24 rgg Jun 2019
