If we can sub- scribe to a cheap streaming service and get access to al- most everything that was ever released, why should we buy a copy? The practice of owning an ac- tual physical album hasn't lost its appeal completely - bands and shops still sell them. How- ever, it has been well docu- mented that most artists earn a pittance from streaming, compared to hard-copy pur- chases while for the big names, millions of streams resulting in an insignificant financial return may be considered a small price to pay for the exposure & cudos gained by riding high in the charts. A lot of local & emerging artists are happy to pay to have their music on platforms like Spotify with the knowledge that they won't necessarily make millions but it at least has a chance of getting heard by an industry 'tastemaker' or in- cluded by playlist-generating al- gorythym serving up mathematically similar songs to a generally lazy audience. So when you're streaming and stumble across a new track that hits your spot, follow the artist links and buy a physical copy or a download.Tell them where you discovered them. You'll feel good for helping a band out and they'll know that the investment they put in is paying off. We’ve created an RGG Spotify account specifically to show- case some of the artists we feature in each issue. Have a lis- ten while reading this issue then go buy the songs!
