Ryan's Gig Guide - October 2018

REVIEW: By Adam Roberts Stingray Special 28 rgg Oct 2018 www.ryansgigguide.com The Ernie Ball Music Man StingRay is an instantly recognisable shape that promises professionalism and performance. Now in 2018, after over 40 years of the same trusty formula, Ernie Ball have decided to completely rethink the StingRay. Old school traditionalists may shud- der at the thought but the more open minded are in for a treat! So let’s introduce the latest earth trembling reincarnation of an iconic classic that has been worn around the necks of some of the most inspirational bass players in recent history. It is clear that the overall intention was to launch this instrument straight to the forefront of contemporary design by refining ergonomic factors, as well as paying major attention to its tonal qualities. It really has received a major overhaul. First off, like most things that have recently hit their Forties, Ernie Ball decided it was time the StingRay lost some weight. Having carted this bass down to weight watchers, they want to shout about it.After all, shaving weight off an instru- ment is no easy feat and it has taken several changes to achieve their goal. Redesigning the tun- ing pegs and changing the bridge piece has taken off half a pound alone. The choice of a light Ash body will also have contributed to keeping it light. The unique sonic and resonate qualities of Ash are also to be enjoyed, espe- cially when combined with the sonic char- acteristics added by the Roasted Maple Neck. When you place this bass’s body against your own, the newly thought out contours become noticeable. The rest for your arm is rounded which makes playing for long periods of time comfortable in multiple posi- tions. The belly cut out also makes the connection between you and your instrument more of a snug fit than a barrage of wood and rib cage.An extra fret has been added which makes a lot more sense when you feel how your palm fits into the newly contoured neck joint.Access, comfort and a seri- ous reduction in weight means you can play better for longer without strain or back pain. Even durability has been im- proved. Stainless steel frets have been added to the mix. These frets have seen a growing popularity amongst high end manufactures due to the fact they last so long. The new 18v preamp offers more headroom and three times the battery life of its predecessor. The system runs on two 9V batteries and the quality battery compart- ments make swapping them out a breeze. The EQ has been altered for more control over your sound. Now a whole new array of vintage tones are available as well as that pokey StingRay
