In this issue Nick J Townsend sets about busting some myths surrounding the music industry, a topic very close to my heart and several of the points he makes are things that I am now reg- ularly witnessing myself since taking on the job of editor of this venerable pub- lication! There are two words in the phrase Music Industry (or Music Business, if you prefer). 50% of them is Music, but the other 50% is Industry. Hands up who likes music (of whatever type suits you)? Well that’s all of us then. Hands up who likes Industry/Business? Not so many, eh? But here’s the rub, live music events are a collaboration between people! There have to be artists or bands and an audience and a venue. So somebody (or better, several people) need to get that organised. That some- body is often called a promoter, but it’s not in the “has to be” list so some- times there isn’t one and therefore the band think the venue will do it and the venue thinks the band will do it and in the end nobody does it! If you’re a band or a venue and you have a gig, the job’s really not done until you tell the audience about it! Sure, you can pop on Facebook the night before and see which of your “friends” are interested in an event near you, but you really need to do a bit more. Get yourself along to Surge- music.com and add your gig details to the free listings. In addition to appear- ing on the Surge Music website, if the venue falls within the area covered by RGG Mag, your gig will appear printed here in the Guide too. Do remember though, the “business” of producing, printing and distributing a mag takes time and we need your May gig details by 20th April. Keep the music live! Have fun! Ryan’s Dave
