Yes, someone at Pantone, the colour-standards company, de- cides what colours are going to be ‘in’ each year. Using a system that I imagine is not disimilar to the sorting hat at Hogwarts, they decide what colour your next iPhone will be. Fawning corpora- tions & their designers bow down to this superior wisdom, make everything in the same colour and adorn them with the same motifs thus turning trend ‘predictions’ into self-fulfilling prophecies. But hey, we all need a flamingo-themed ironing board cover and matching pencil case don’t we? Music too, has become a victim of this method of reversing the direction that trends come into existence. As our columnist Nick J Townsend touches on in his arti- cle on page 14 [oops - we messed up and omitted Nick’s article - sorry Nick] we’re spoonfed identikit music from identikit artists who we’ve often never heard of until they pop up in a TV ad break, singing competition or cooking pro- gramme. Don’t be lazy and just lap up the music you’re being fed by the big ‘pop machine’ that’s taken over the TV. Make the effort listen to music by bands you’ve never heard of, check out the local scene and go see your mates’ band! Take a bloody gamble!
