RYAN'S GIG GUIDE OCTOBER 2015 - page 34

RGG October 2015 - p.34
Twenty years ago The Wildhearts released
their most commercially successful album ever
P H U Q and tonight the band hit the stage at
Wulfrun Hall Wolverhampton to let us see and
hear just why we the fans hold both the album
and the band so close to our hearts
The Wulfrun is packed with Wildhearted folk
who are buzzing to see their favourite band live
You’ve only got to go on a certain social media
site and look up the group ‘All Things GiNGER
WiLDHEART’ to see how devoted and
downright friendly the fans are This feeling of
family is certainly apparent tonight
The night begins with the first support act
Ginger Wildheart’s brilliant side project
Hey!Hello! who start the night with raucous
opener Black Valentine Up next is one we can
all sing along to Feral Days but it’s Lock for
Rock The Thrill of it All and the last track
Swimwear that really send the crowd into a
rock ‘n’ roll frenzy The bands’ new lead vocalist
Hollis Mahady of Love Zombies is a natural on
stage She commands the stage with her bright
loud personality stunning good looks and
incredible vocals Ginger Wildheart brings the
Wildheart sound to the band with amazing
vocal harmonies catchy chorus’s and crunching
guitars The band are on fire and if this first set
is anything to go by the rest of the evening is
going to be a sure fire hit
Next up is Glasgow four piece Baby Chaos who
carry the energy provided by Hey!Hello! and
run with it After a seventeen year hiatus you
would think the band would be a little sketchy
musically but no not at all If you took the
Manic’s Ash Queens of the Stoneage and
Smashing Pumpkins and mixed them all up in a
bowl of rock ‘n’ roll you’d get an idea howmuch
Baby Chaos Rock! An absolutely brilliant set of
melodic yet heavy rock
Here’s what we were all waiting for though The
Wildhearts hit the stage with the phenomenal
I Wanna Go Where the People Go and of course
follow up with twelve tracks of pure
gloriousness from P H U Q It’s almost
impossible to pick a highlight from this setlist;
each song is played and performed with every
ounce of passion and heart that Ginger CJ Rich
and Jon have The tracks that just pipped the
others to top post for me are Nita Nitro Woah
Shit You Got Through Cold Patootie
Tango Caprice and final track Getting It
Honestly picking favourites is a hard job
when everything sounds so bloody
good It’s easy to see how much the
band love this – the huge beaming
smiles on their faces give it all away The
fans’ smiles are even bigger reflecting just as
much love back at the four blokes on stage
After a very brief interlude that saw the whole
crowd join in with a rendition of “Don’t worry
about me don’t worry about me I’ll be alright
Don’t worry about me” The Wildhearts bolt
back on and go straight into Caffeine Bomb
which sends the fans all kinds of crazy This is
followed up with Red Light Green Light and
more musical gems The highlights of the
encore are the absolutely fantastic Everlone
Sick of Drugs and the very last offering of the
night x the Pain There’s a feeling in The
Wulfrun tonight; a feeling that we’ve all seen
the best Wildhearts gig ever and that maybe
we won’t be seeing any more One sincerely
hopes the latter is just a feeling and nothing
more but if this was their last fantastic foray
they’ve gone out with one almighty bang!
